Denmark Open Super 1000: PV Sindhu battles hard to reach quarterfinals, Kidambi Srikanth knocked out

Indian badminton superstar PV Sindhu registered a hard-fought win over Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the round of 16 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Denmark Open Super 1000 tournament in Odense.

World No. 7 Sindhu won after a struggle against 13th-ranked Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-16, 12-21, 21-15 in 67 minutes in her last 16 match.

The Indian won eight consecutive points at one stage as she wrapped up the game on her second game point.

The second game went the Thai player’s way from the start as she jumped into the lead and maintained her advantage throughout. Sindhu made some unforced errors which allowed the Thai player to take control of the game.

The decider was a lot closer and both players fought for each point before Sindhu opened up a four-point lead. She maintained the edge and went on to seal victory at 21-18.

Sindhu will face South Korea’s AN Seyoung, the current world No. 8, in her last eight clash. The Korean player beat Russia’s Evgeniya Kosetskaya in two games, 21-9, 21-11.

This is Sindhu’s first tournament since winning the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in August. One of India’s greatest Olympians, Sindhu had taken a break to rejuvenate before making a comeback in this tournament.

However, India suffered a setback as Kidambi Srikanth could not progress beyond the second round in men’s singles, going down to top seed and world No 1 Kento Momota after putting up a tough fight in the first game.

Srikanth lost 21-23, 9-21 to the Japanese star in a match that lasted 43 minutes. This was Srikanth’s 10th straight loss against the Japanese shuttler.

The Indian mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and N Sikki Reddy, too, failed to make the quarter-finals following their 21-17, 19-21, 21-11 loss to Chun Man Tang and Ying Suet Tse of Hong Kong.
