Former India fast bowler Ajit Agarkar recalled India’s historic T20 World Cup triumph from 2007, saying the young bunch never believed they could achieve something as special as they did 14 years ago.
MS Dhoni led India to a historic triumph in the T20 World Cup in 2007 wherein the Asian giants beat arch-rivals Pakistan in a thrilling final. India put behind the disappointment of the 2007 World Cup debacle and fought back with a young team to win the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup, which was grown on to become one of the premier cricket tournaments across the globe.
Ajit Agarkar was one of the few senior members of the side as the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid decided to give the T20 World Cup a miss. Agarkar featured in 3 matches but came up with crucial contributions, including a 9-ball 14 against Pakistan in the group stages.
Stressing that India-Pakistan matches always bring the emotions out of the players from both the dies, Agarkar said it’s important for India to not take Pakistan lightly when the two teams meet in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Notably, India begin their campaign against Pakistan in Dubai on October 24.
Stakes are always high when India play Pakistan: Agarkar
“The entire tournament (2007 T20 World Cup) was a dream tour for us. We never thought a bunch of youngsters could achieve such a feat, that too against Pakistan,” Agarkar said while speaking on Star Sports show ‘Class of 2007’.
“I think the India-Pakistan rivalry always brings a tidal wave of emotions and is one the most anticipated clashes in the World Cup.
“The stakes are always high when India and Pakistan play together but going by Team India’s current form and taking the stats into consideration, I don’t think Pakistan will pose that much of a challenge.
“Having said that, I don’t think we should take our neighbours lightly because cricket is a funny game, and things can change at any moment, especially in the T20 format,” he added.
Virat Kohli will lead India in the 7th edition of the T20 World Cup as the skipper, who will quit T20I captaincy after the World Cup, eyes his maiden ICC trophy victory. MS Dhoni, who led Chennai Super Kings to their 4th title in IPL 2021, will join the team as the mentor.
